Species Information: (Pandinus imperator)
Origin: This scorpion originates from the tropical rainforest of West Africa.
Size And Longevity:
All scorpions have a venomous sting to subdue their prey, although many of the
scorpions only pack enough venom to be effective on insects and some
very small lizards and to a human would deliver only enough to be similar
to the effects of a bee sting and is also very painful but not deadly, they have
a very very sharp hallow stinger with two venom sacks for delivering their
sting and will usually hold onto their prey with their pincers while they deliver
their sting before they begin to eat it, this less venomous type scorpion is quiet
plentiful in the pet trade, scorpions have been known to live from 6 to 8 years,
this species is nocturnal meaning they are active at night, they are usually very
dark black in color with very broad pincers for holding their prey with a strong grip,
this species usually gets 7.5 to 8 inches in size.
Habitat And Caging Requirements:
These scorpions do enjoy burrowing in the moss and
climbing, a good 10 to 15 gallon tank can house two
of these adult scorpions, they don't require much room,
you can use 4 to 6 inches of soil or sand for substrate,
and some use sphagnum moss it depends on your liking
you may want to add some rocks also, you may also
want to add chola wood for hiding places, use low wattage bulbs,
and a water dish and change the water daily with fresh
water, and you will have your' little scorpion setup
and you are all set to go for some time to come for the
life of your' new friend, you may also want to give the
setup a very light misting once a week with a spray
bottle with some nice clean water in it.
Temperature And Lighting Requirements:
These animals are primarily nocturnal so they seem
to do best with low wattage bulbs for lighting, they are
also use to desert like temperature's so
you need to keep the temperature around 75 to 85
degrees.
Feeding And Nutrition:
These guys seem too do well primarily on crickets but will
also have a appetite for many other insects as well and do
to their size they even eat small lizards in the wild, 2 or 3 grown
crickets a week will usually do them.
Handling And Care:
"Please Note", all scorpions have a sting that may effect some people differently
than others just as bee stings effect some people different than others, some people
may have an allergic reaction to them just as some people do with bee stings even
though this species is not considered deadly this is still something to consider if you
are new to scorpions, some may wish to hold them anyway but I think that if they
have to be handled in cage cleaning or whatever reason that it is best to use tongs
to pick them up by their tails and move them "but this is just my personal opinion",
but all in all they can be very beautiful and fascinating animals to watch.
