Species: (Python molurus bivittatus)
Origin: This animal originates from of Southeast Asia and Indonesia.
Size And Longevity:
This animal is a beautiful snake but has been called one of the worlds 6th largest snakes,
these animals are nocturnal hunters and like to hunt for prey at night, there are some things
to know about this animal before you buy one, first off they get very large, heavy, muscular
and very powerful and that is why I do not recommend this animal for the average reptile
enthusiast, they will also require very large secure housing as they grow and further more
I would even suggest for the most experienced snake handler to have some one with them
at all times when they are handling this animal after it reaches 8 to 9 feet or more just as an
extra safety measure because they get quiet large, strong, and heavy,
all in all these are fascinating animals, the largest one known to man was a
size of 26 feet, but in captivity 17 to 18 feet is more common and these animals
are constrictors and they grab their prey and wrap around it with crushing power,
these animals have been known to live from 20 to 25 years in captivity, these animals
are usually tan to light brownish tan in color with beautiful dark brown patterns
bordered in a dark beautiful black color all the way down the dorsal area, these are great
looking animals, they are usually pretty docile and if purchased as babies they tend
to become pretty tame if handled properly, if you understand this animal and what to
expect an how to house this animal then you have came to the right place to get your'
pet python, this is a beautiful animal.
Habitat And Caging Requirements:
This species is usually a bit difficult to keep because they do require
a large amount of space to keep and seem to do well at a temperature
of around 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, 1 baby or small juvenile animal can
be kept in a 30 or 40 gallon tank or vivarium type of setup or home made
type of reptile setup at least 8 feet long by 4 feet wide, by
4 feet high, as this species is arboreal and does enjoy hanging in limbs.
You can decorate the tank with live or plastic plants, aspen substrate
and rock's, this species seems to do best in a tropical like aquarium
or vivarium type setup with a basking area and some moss, and give them
a hiding place, and a water dish to drink from and add humidity, and
you may also want to add another water dish large enough for the
animal to climb inside of and soak this also helps with shedding and
keep the water clean by changing it every other day, also keep a water
spray bottle handy to mist down the setup once or twice every day and this
will also help with your' pet's shedding, they also enjoy a basking area,
you also need a UV light to set up a basking area for your' animal and
place in some large limbs for it to hang from.
Temperature And Lighting Requirements:
You want to use low wattage bulbs' for best results' to avoid
over heating of your' pet as over heating could cause your' pet
to dehydrate, these animals' seem to fair well at temperatures
of (80 to 90 degrees F.), you also need a UV light set up for a
basking area so the animal can move to and from heat as needed.
Feeding And Nutrition:
For feeding your' pet, they like to feed at night' and small ones will feed
on small mice once or twice a week but as they grow they will begin to take
larger frozen or pre killed prey items less often fed also, if fed frozen prey items
it does seem to help with the taming process also.
Handling And Care:
"Alright for the care and handling of your pet", I know these guys' are so
cute that your' going too want too handle them all the time right?, but when you first get
them it is a good idea put them in their new home and mostly enjoy watching them
get use to their new home and feed them well for at least a couple of day's which
is really a good idea for any new pet that you get of any kind and then gradually
start too handle them from time to time, this is called acclimating your' animal
which cut's down stress which in turn make's you have a happier healthier pet,
these are babies so you they should tame pretty easy.
