Origin: Peninsular (Western) Malaysia, Sumatra east of the central dividing range of mountains, Bangka Island and other islands in the Strait of Malacca, including the Lingga islands, Riau islands, and Pinang.

Size: Males generally reach lengths of 3-5 feet while females are larger averaging at 4-6 feet but have been known to exceed 9 feet.

Life Span: Around 20 years

Habitat: Found in tropical forests and near marsh land within Malaysian Peninsula, Sumatra and Indonesia.

Housing: Blood Pythons as hatchlings will require a large faunarium or similar size vivarium, but as they grow rapidly they require larger housing.

Note that Blood Pythons will require very solid housing due to their strength and the possibility that they could damage their enclosures. It is also advisable to use a waterproof lining in the base of their cage due to their high humidity requirements and also to protect the enclosure if the snake tips its water bowl.

Decor: Being heavy bodied snakes, Blood Pythons will need solid decor such as, large logs, fake rock hides and large solid water bowls that are difficult to overturn.

Substrate: Blood Pythons will require a substrate that will hold high humidity such as, a sedge peat/orchid bark mix or cypress mulch, as well as live sphagnum moss.

Temperature: Blood Pythons need a daytime temperature gradient of 31-32c/88-92f on the hot side and down to 25-26.5c/77-80f on the cool side, and a general nighttime temperature of around 25.5c/78-80f.

Heating: As hatchlings in faunariums, Blood Pythons will require a 12watt heat mat beneath the enclosure, controlled by a HabiStat mat thermostat. As the graduate into wooden vivariums they will need either an infrared heat bulb or ceramic heater controlled by a thermostat, please feel free to contact us to discuss the various thermostats you could use with these heat sources. In larger cages a reptile radiator may be required.

Note, that all heat sources should be protected by a securely fixed guard to prevent the snake from burning itself on any exposed heat element.

Humidity: Blood Pythons require a humidity level of 70-90%. To achieve this, the cage will need to be sprayed 2-3 times daily. Alternatively, a fogger or misting system could be used to achieve these high levels of humidity.

Feeding: Hatchling Blood Pythons will start out eating defrosted rat pups or small mice and will rapidly progress through the food sizes. As an adult, males will usually eat large/jumbo rats, while females will usually eat medium/large rabbits.

Handling: Blood Pythons have an undeserved reputation of being aggressive snakes, although hatchling Blood Pythons have a tendency of being a bit nippy. As long as they are handled regularly from a young age, they usually tame down without too much difficulty. Due to an adult female’s large size, two people may be required when it comes to handling.
