Species :

The Carpet Python belongs to the Pythonidae family.

Origin :

These snakes originated from Australia, Indonesia and New Guinea.

Size and Longevity :

Carpet Pythons can grow anywhere between 8 and 10 feet long; the most common length is around 9 feet. Carpet Pythons live anywhere from 15 to 20 years.

General Description :

The Carpet Python does well in captivity and is generally very tame. Like most snakes, Carpet Pythons are nocturnal, hiding during the day time and coming out mostly at night.

Habitat and Cage :

Carpet Pythons are climbers. They will climb anything around them including trees and brush. For these, it is more suitable to have a taller terrarium rather than a wider one. The general rule is that the enclosure should be at least two-thirds the size of the snake.

Some type of substrate needs to be provided, which is generally aspen shavings or newspaper. The terrarium should be set up so that there is a warm end (85-90F) and cool end (70 - 75F). The temperature should not be allowed to drop below 70F or be raised above 95F at any time. There should be a hiding spot in both temperature zones for the snake's comfort. Not providing adequate hiding areas can lead to stress which can cause health problems and a shorter life span.

Carpet Pythons live in a forest type environment and are typically found in trees and shrubbery. The humidity of the enclosure should be kept between 50 and 60%. A water bowl or pond that is big enough for the snake to get inside of should also be provided. The water is necessary for survival and will help maintain the humidity of the enclosure.

These snakes do not need any special lighting, but they will need approximately 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness each day to simulate their natural environment. Almost any type of light will work including a regular light bulb or the natural light.

Feeding :

Young Carpet Pythons need to eat once every 7 to 10 days while adults only need to eat once a month. Over feeding (power feeding) can lead to long term health problems and a shorter life span. Food sources include mice, rats and rabbits. The meal provided should be approximately the same size as the largest part of the snake's body. Carpet pythons are large animals and are aggressive by nature when feeding.

Tip: Placing dead prey in the enclosure for the snake to find may encourage a more gentle eating habit.

Handling a snake too soon after eating can induce regurgitation, so handling is not recommended for at least 2 days. It takes approximately 10 days to completely digest food depending on the size of the prey and the temperature of the enclosure. Carpet Pythons are large snakes that may require more than one person to hold. It is always encouraged to have someone to help handling any python over 6ft long.
