WINTER SHIPPING ALERT – HOLD FOR PICKUP
Is it safe for reptiles & amphibians to be shipped during the winter?
It is safe if you are ordering from a reputable dealer(s) that has had several years’ experience packing and shipping during the winter months. The industry standard packing supplies for winter shipping are;
Heat Packs 40hr, Reptile Deli Cups, Cotton Bags W/Tie (also known as Snake Bags) and an Insulated Box.
If these items are used along with packing the specific animal(s) in the correct container you shouldn’t have any problems with the shipment.
For additional safety we use FedEx, UPS or USPS – Hold For Pickup because we have found that even after using all the proper shipping supplies it’s the second half (out for delivery) of the parcel being in transit that increases the DOA percentage.
Below is an example of a shipment that was sent to Anchorage, AK on November 5, 2013. On the date of arrival 11/06/13 the forecasted temperature was a high of 36 and low of 28 degrees. If the parcel would have been placed in a delivery vehicle shortly after it arrived at 9:24am and spent the next few hours with the carrier before being delivered I’m certain the contents would have perished.
Therefore, if an order is placed with us and you are in an area where it’s cold (40 degrees or below) the package will be shipped via Hold for Pickup with one of the three shippers for the safety of the contents. We will notify you via phone/email which carrier is being used and the location the package can be retrieved from.
